Meredith John

Meredith grew up in Brampton, Ontario. From 1950 to 1953, he studied at the Ontario College of Art under Jock Macdonald, as did his brother, William Ronald (1926–98), future member of Painters Eleven, before him. Afterward, he worked for a time as a cartoonist for the local newspaper, the Brampton Conservator. His first solo exhibition took place in 1958. From 1960, he was represented by Av Isaacs, who would exhibit his work until he closed his Toronto gallery in 1991. In addition to a great number of solo exhibitions, Meredith took part in important group exhibitions at major public institutions, such the National Gallery of Canada. In 1986, Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives in Brampton devoted a retrospective to his work over a 30-year career. Meredith died in Toronto in 2000 at the age of 66.
