Vers le milieu des ann\u00e9es 1950, il rompt d\u00e9finitivement avec le style de Borduas et d\u00e9veloppe sa propre technique de peinture, qu\u2019il applique avec les mains. En 1956, McEwen pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 la galerie L\u2019Actuelle un ensemble de tableaux qui, comme le souligne Constance Naubert-Riser, \u00ab\u00a0constitue le point de d\u00e9part v\u00e9ritable de son \u0153uvre\u00a0\u00bb, dont l\u2019esth\u00e9tique est \u00e0 inscrire dans une mouvance n\u00e9oplasticienne puisant dans l\u2019expressionnisme abstrait et le Color\u00a0Field. Les \u0153uvres de McEwen ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es \u00e0 maintes reprises dans des expositions individuelle et collective \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec, \u00e0 Toronto et \u00e0 New\u00a0York. En 1973, le Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al lui consacre une r\u00e9trospective; il est suivi par le Mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts de Montr\u00e9al en 1987.
