David Brown Milne

1882-1953

David Milne pursued one of the most singular approaches to painting in twentieth-century Canadian art. Rather than seeking the monumentality often associated with Canadian landscape painting of his generation, Milne reduced the visible world to its essential pictorial relationships, exploring the tensions between line, colour, space and the unpainted surface.

His landscapes, interiors and still lifes are characterized by an extraordinary economy of means. Areas of bare support frequently assume as much importance as painted forms, while restrained passages of colour and calligraphic lines establish a delicate equilibrium between representation and abstraction. For Milne, the subject was ultimately inseparable from the formal problem presented by the painting itself.

Having spent formative years in New York State and participated in the landmark 1913 Armory Show, Milne developed largely apart from the dominant currents of Canadian modernism. His highly independent practice, extending across both painting and printmaking, remains distinguished by its intellectual rigour and radical simplicity.
