Paul-Émile Borduas

1905 - 1960

Born in 1905 in Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Paul-Émile Borduas was the founder of the Automatist movement and one of the leading figures of modern North American art. After apprenticing with church decorator and painter Ozias Leduc, and later studying at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and in Paris, he gradually moved away from classical representation in the early 1940s. In 1942, he presented a landmark exhibition of abstract gouaches at Montréal's Théâtre de l'Ermitage. The works from this period, including Sans titre (Untitled), 1942, laid the foundations of Automatism.

In 1948, Borduas authored Refus global, a manifesto co-signed by fifteen other members of the Automatist group (for a total of sixteen signatories), openly denouncing the conventions of Quebec society during the Duplessis era. Its publication cost him his teaching position at Montréal's École du meuble—a turning point now regarded as one of the defining moments in the emergence of Quebec's cultural modernity.

Borduas settled first in Provincetown and then in New York in 1953, where he encountered American Abstract Expressionism firsthand. During this pivotal New York period, he further developed his use of the palette knife—a tool he had already adopted in place of the brush by the mid-1940s. His gestures became broader, his impasto more substantial, and the last traces of figuration disappeared from his canvases as he devoted himself entirely to the materiality of paint. Works from this period are among the most sought-after by collectors of post-war Canadian art.

In September 1955, Borduas moved to Paris. Working from his studio on Rue Rousselet, he embarked on the radical stylistic phase he described as a "simplifying leap," reducing his palette to black and white. Using a trowel, he spread fields of white paint punctuated by opaque black forms, creating the highly textured black-and-white paintings with topographical surfaces that represent the culmination of his career. Masterworks such as Rencontre précipitée (1957) and Bombardement (1958) exemplify this refined aesthetic.

Borduas died in Paris in 1960. His works are held in the collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work was also the subject of a major retrospective at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1988. At auction, paintings from his New York and Paris periods consistently achieve some of the highest prices for post-war Canadian art, reflecting his foundational contribution to the development of abstract painting in Canada and internationally.
