Dated 1988, this piece by Marcelle Ferron brings to mind her travels through China and Japan, thanks to its vertical nature, calligraphic qualities, and colours. Glowing red washes are softly brushed over the entire pictorial area. They are a beautiful counterpoint to the fierce spatula strikes that break open the painting’s upper and lower portions. Although Ferron’s visceral language is still within the realm of abstraction, this composition is mildly figurative, with its combustive and crackling effects that dance across the surface of the canvas, as if it is licked by flames, sparks, and embers that shoot from all sides in a fiery palette.
